“Wine is bottled poetry” Robert Louis Stevenson
Who am I and why am I running this wine society?
I moved into the village of Hannington in June 1999 and got to know many of the village people through the W.I., keep-fit classes, the quiz night in the pub and by talking to people I met at various functions.
Then, I would rush off to work at 7 o’clock in the morning and returned home about 7 o’clock in the evening each day but since I retired in December 2004 I have a little more time on my hands, though not as much as I thought I would, it is surprising how busy you are when retired.
Ihave belonged to and helped run a wine society for staff at the head office where I worked for over twenty years. When I retired, I asked a few people in the village if they would appreciate a wine society and I got a resounding yes, so I posted a leaflet through every door and sent it round by the village email. I had fifteen people attend a meeting where I explained what I had in mind for the wine society and would they be happy about that and they all said yes.
“With wine I wash away my cares” John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester
The society has just celebrated its 3rd birthday, and since June 2005, we have had a variety of presenters who have talked and given us extremely interesting information about the vineyards, the grapes, the winemakers, the countries and bought along some excellent wines for us to taste. This has given everyone a small insight into the very large world of wine.
We have also visited three English vineyards and have learnt all about the making of champagne during our visit to the champagne houses in Reims.
We do not make a profit; everything is ploughed back into the Society.
